During a Protected PCI procedure, the Impella 2.5® and Impella CP® heart pumps temporarily assist the pumping function of the heart during stent placement to ensure blood flow is maintainedto critical organs.
The Impella is inserted through a sheath and guided over a wire into the left ventricle. Once in position, and turned on, blood is drawn into the Impella from the left ventricle and expelled into the ascending aorta, taking over the pumping function of your heart.
The Impella heart pump remains on until the stenting procedure is complete
Once your doctor deems it appropriate, the Impella heart pump will be turned off and removed. You will not go home with the Impella heart pump.
